ABOUT US
In the fall of 2020, a committee of five Eldorado/285 Recycles members formed a Plastics Pollution committee to initiate a project to address the growing crisis of plastic in our local community.
In the spring of 2021, the committee organized a Zoom streaming of the documentary, The Story of Plastic, followed by a panel discussion. Santa Fe County supervisors and New Mexico state legislators were invited to the screening and became interested in legislative action to address the problem of plastic pollution. In the process of preparing for the screening, two members of the committee were introduced to the national environmental organization, Beyond Plastics, and completed their seven-week online educational course. In February of 2022, Beyond Plastics decided to launch a Local Groups and Affiliates program to build a stronger grassroots movement to tackle plastic pollution in the United States. Beyond Plastics Santa Fe was one of the first local groups to join this initiative. Spurred on by the advocacy of Beyond Plastics Santa Fe, we hope legislative action will lead to an ordinance in Santa Fe County to reduce single-use plastics, as well as state-wide legislation to make plastic producers responsible for cleaning up their waste. |
